Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux and Heartburn

As the number of people suffering from acid reflux disease has increased, more and more people are looking for natural remedies or home cures to get quick relief from heartburn. There are many home remedies available. However, one has to learn by trial and error what works.

Sometimes you may need to take a combination of these home remedies to relieve your heartburn symptoms. Most acid reflux sufferers have reported good results with some or all of these natural remedies and often prefer them to medications and their harmful side effects.

Please remember these home remedies are not listed any order of preference or effectiveness. It is best to try them your self before deterring what is right for you. Unfortunately, the reality is that natural treatment for heartburn is a trial and error process.

1. Switch to a healthier diet of fruits and vegetables: fruits such as apples, bananas, and papaya along with vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and carrots help in reducing acid reflux symptoms. Stay away from fruits and vegetables containing Stay away from vegetables that have high fat contents such as avocados. Avoid acidic fruit drinks such as orange juice, red sauces and red wine (despite other health benefits of red wine).

2. Drink plenty of water throughout the day: Keeping your body well hydrated will help to dilute the acid in your stomach. Thus reducing occurrences of heartburn.

3. Drink a glass of milk or eat a full serving of yogurt: Some people prefer to drink skim or 2% milk instead of whole milk to derive the benefits of a low fat diet while keeping acid reflux at bay. Sugar free or plain yogurt is also helpful in reducing heartburn.

4. Chamomile or fennel tea: Sip a cup of warm chamomile or fennel tea for quick relief from acid reflux while enjoying its soothing effects.

5. Chew on a ginger root: Bite into a small piece of fresh ginger root whenever you feel acid reflux coming on. If this is too strong or distasteful, you can buy ginger herbal capsules. Take these regularly as directed to reduce the effects of acid reflux. You could also try dropping a small piece of ginger in your tea if you prefer the taste of spiced tea.

6. Eat a few almonds: Some heartburn sufferers have hailed almond as the miracle cure for acid reflux. Eating a handful of almonds every morning or after meals, has shown to reduce acid reflux symptoms in some people.

7. Spoonful of apple cider vinegar: Swallow two to three tablespoons of undiluted apple cider vinegar whenever you get an acute attack acid reflux. To prevent reoccurrences, drink the same amount dissolved in warm water.

8. Aniseed and lavender mixture: Some people have reported good success by consuming a mixture of aniseed and lavender dissolved in distilled water. Use about a half teaspoon of the mixture in an 8-oz. glass of water.

9. Papaya enzyme pills. Pills available in the form of papaya enzyme pills has helped put an end to acid reflux symptoms for some people.

10. Chew gum regularly: Try chewing sugarless gum after every meal. The action of chewing stimulates saliva, which in turn helps to dilute the contents of your stomach and moves food from your esophagus into your stomach. That should reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Try some of these home remedies and you may just be able to kiss acid reflux goodbye forever.
