Home Remedies for Treating Acne Scars

The skin is often called “the largest organ of the human body.” It is an organ because it breathes and can absorb good and bad bacteria just like other organs. Our skin is made up of three primary layers (see diagram below): the top layer is called the epidermis and provides protection against infections and acts as insulation against water, heat and the cold. The middle layer is called the dermis, which holds “the appendages” of skin: – the hair and nails and the sweat, sebaceous, and mammary glands. The bottom layer is known as the hypodermis and its purpose is to attach the skin to underlying bone and muscles as well as supply it with blood vessels and nerves.

Skin becomes inflamed when pores get clogged from oily/waxy matter (sebum) that is secreted by microscopic glands in the skin. A normal amount of sebum is good for keeping our skins moist. A bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes that normally lives on our skin feeds on this sebum and grows. Sebum trapped by the dead skin cells that are constantly sloughed off leads to the formation of whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. Acne affects up to 80% of people in their teens and up to 5% of adults.

Your skin may be adversely affected by eating an unbalanced diet or problems in your digestive tract. One of the best natural ways to prevent skin diseases such as acne is to make sure that you exercise, drink plenty of water, eat lots of fruit and vegetables and avoid too much tea, coffee and alcohol. Sometimes, because of hormonal imbalances or other problems, the skin develops problems no matter what precautions you take.

Most people recover from acne without any permanent scarring but in some severe cases, acne leaves behind disfiguring acne scars. The best solution is to prevent acne lesions from happening. You don’t have to purchase expensive products to get great results in clearing your skin and preventing acne scars.

Here are some home remedies you may want to try:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar – The acid in apple cider vinegar helps to clean facial pores. It can also kill bacteria and remove excess oil on the face.
  • Aloe Vera – The juice or gel found in the aloe vera plant helps to heal skin problems such as acne. Use twice a day to reduce scarring and as a skin cleanser.
  • Brewer’s Yeast – Contains chromium, a mineral that helps control how you process sugar. Two teaspoons of brewer’s yeast sprinkled on your oatmeal or breakfast cereal helps to clear the skin and prevent buildup of bacteria that causes acne.
  • Egg Whites – Egg whites are a natural astringent. Apply as you would a mask on your face and after a few moments, wash with clear water.
  • Green Tea – A natural antioxidant, green tea can be very beneficial in preventing acne. The antioxidants found in green tea fight the “free radicals” that damage skin cells and tissues.
  • Oatmeal – Has long been used for skin irritations because it draws oil and impurities from the skin. Apply cooked and cooled oatmeal to the face as a mask for about fifteen minutes and then wash off with water.

You do not feel very social if you have big, ugly sores and acne scars on your face, so you tend to stay home, eat things you should not and feel sorry for yourself.

Instead, pamper yourself and your skin with some of the treatments listed above. These and other natural and effective treatments can be used safely on your skin without buying expensive remedies that sometimes contain irritants that are harmful to your skin and lead to more serious problems. Do not let your entire life be controlled by acne and acne scars.
